Mountain High in Wrightwood to open on Saturday

Ski and snowboard season in Southern California is here.

Mountain High Resort announced it will allow slope access starting Saturday at noon, becoming the first snow resort in the area to open.

The Wrightwood skiing and snowboarding destination said it received 10-14 inches of snow Thursday night. Its opening is a day later than the mountain initially expected.

“Opening day is here, and we couldn’t be more excited,” John McColly from the resort said.  “With (the) fresh snow, this is going to be one of our better openings.”

Slopes will be accessible until 10 p.m. on opening day, and from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

While skiers and snowboarders are welcome, the resort encouraged visitors to stay on designated trails due to early-season conditions. The resort said four lifts will be running to take people from the bottom to the top of the mountain.

The resort’s opening comes after it increased snowmaking, purchased new grooming equipment, and reopened its Discovery chairlift during the offseason. Mountain High said it will also introduce 1st Turn, a new teaching program for beginner skiers.

Visitors can tube and sled starting Nov. 28, the resort said, and chair rides that take passengers to its maximum elevation of 8,200 feet will be available.

The resort said skiers and snowboarders can save the most by purchasing tickets online. The resort’s Black Friday deals will be available after Dec. 1.

The snowfall is a result of Southern California’s second rainstorm of the week, bringing up to 14 inches of snow in some areas of the San Bernardino mountains.
