A $10,000 reward was offered Thursday in the death of a man who was shot when he and his son checked on a car security alarm outside his South Los Angeles home.
Juan Luis Marquez, 41, was shot and killed Aug. 16 by one of four people, described by authorities as juveniles, in the alley behind his family’s home in the 8000 block of South Hooper Avenue.
“He was an extremely hard working man who provided for his family and was always there for them,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Steve DeJong said of the married father of four children. “His murder has devastated his family.”
The county’s board of supervisors is offering the reward for information in the killing.
Deputies responded to Marquez’s home at about 9:20 p.m. Aug. 16 and found the father and son suffering from gunshot wounds in the alley. Marquez, who was shot in the upper body, died at the scene. His son was hospitalized and treated for a gunshot wound to a leg.
The father and son went outside after hearing their car’s security alarm. A month earlier, someone tried to the steal the car parked in the alley, DeJong said.
Marquez and his son encountered three juveniles in the alley, the LASD said. When they confronted them, a fourth juvenile shot Marquez and his son.
Detailed descriptions of the four individuals were not immediately available. Investigators released photos of a red or burgundy KIA K5, a four-door sedan, sought in connection with the crime.
At a news conference Thursday announce the reward, DeJong asked for the public’s help in the investigation. He said family members declined to appear on camera because they fear for their safety.
Anyone with information about the killing was asked to call sheriff’s homicide bureau at 323-890-5500 or contact CrimeStoppers.
