Man dies following traffic stop with Claremont police

The Claremont Police Department said the sheriff’s department is investigating the death of a man who died after “a use-of-force incident occurred” during a traffic stop with police officers last week.

On Friday, police received reports of a man acting “erratically and possibly under the influence of narcotics,” near the area of Claremont Boulevard and Andrew Drive, according to the department. Officers were then told the man had entered a vehicle and left.

Upon arriving to the area, officers spotted the man, who was later identified as Rancho Cucamonga resident Diego Alfonso Rios, and enforced a traffic stop. The department said he appeared to be under the influence of a substance and was asked to exit the vehicle, which was followed by the use of force.

The department did not specify what happened after Rios stepped out of the vehicle to warrant the use-of-force.

Shortly after, the man became unresponsive. Claremont police said officers performed lifesaving measures on Rios until paramedics arrived. Once medical personnel got to the scene, emergency treatment was continued and Rios was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he later died.

A cause of death was not specified. Claremont police did not reveal the names of the officers involved in the traffic stop.

As per protocol, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau is investigating the case. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division (JSID) will monitor the investigation.
