Man Dead After Fiery and Bizarre Hours-Long Standoff

An armed, barricaded who held law enforcement at bay for hours in a bizarre, fiery standoff at a San Gabriel home Thursday that forced the closure of the 10 freeway later died on the property.

It was not immediately clear whether he was injured by law enforcement or if it was self-inflicted.

His identity was not immediately released.

The man, wearing a blue Dodgers hat and smoking a cigarette, jumped from the home with a weapon in his hand after the home began to smolder at 5 p.m.

According to reports from the scene, the man fired shots from the home at East Saxon Avenue and Brighton Street and may have assaulted a relative at the beginning of the SWAT standoff, which began around 12:30 p.m.

Streets and the 10 Freeway nearby were shut down while police and SWAT teams surround the home. Police were asking the public to avoid the area.

Firefighters were still battling the blaze as the man began crawling under vehicles around the property, with a weapon in hand, until 6:30 p.m.

During the ordeal, the man ignited three structures on the property. At one point, the Special Enforcement Bureau deputies tried to force the man off the property with gas, but were unsuccessful.
