The images of Black Friday’s shooting at Valley Fair mall in San Jose are still rattling shoppers.
As shots rang out, hundreds of people ran into the streets to escape the danger.
But that story of fear also sparked a story about the kindness of strangers.
A family who lives across the street from the mall made a decision to open their doors and welcome in panicked shoppers.
Ring doorbell video shows two girls asking the Garcia family for refuge right after the mall shooting. And right behind them were many others seeking safety for the same reason.
“Just for a second I thought maybe it was a prank,” said Martin Garcia. “Or, maybe I was being pranked because they all ran to the back of the house. And I looked and there were more people. And I realized there’s something bad going on. I got to let them in the house.”
One of the shoppers who was able to shelter in Garcia’s home was Orieoyonna Johnson from San Francisco.
“We landed in the street of our wonderful new friends, the angels, the Garcia family,” Johnson said. “And that was a breathtaking moment — the love and the comfort that we felt when Mr. Garcia opened his arms like an angel.”
Meanwhile, San Jose police on Monday announced the arrest of a suspect in the shooting that left three injured.
