A fire broke out on a container ship in San Pedro Friday evening, prompting a large firefighter response at the Port of Los Angeles.
The fire was reported around 6:38 p.m. on the container ship “1 Henry Hudson,” according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The ship’s crew reported an electrical fire coming from below deck that spread to the shipping containers on board.
More than 100 LAFD personnel were responding to the fire, according to officials. Port police and Customs were assisting to deboard the 23-person crew onboard the 1100′ docked ship.
All crew members on board were accounted for, according to the LAFD.
No injuries were reported.
At approximately 7:58 p.m., an explosion was noted mid-deck that affected power, including lights and crane operations on the ship.
“LAFD HazMat companies are monitoring air quality as suppression efforts continue on the ship’s sub-levels,” wrote the LAFD.
All LAFD members responding to the fire were fully encapsulated and using their self-contained breathing apparatus.
“A waterside safety zone around the ship has been established and the State Route 47 has been closed due to smoke and visibility concerns. No injuries have been reported and all crew members are accounted for.Four of the Port’s seven container terminals have suspended operations,” wrote the Port of Los Angeles in statement to NBC4.
The Vincent Thomas Bridge was shut down by the CHP indefinitely. No evacuation orders were issued, but a shelter-in-place warning was issued for the surrounding communities.
The shelter-in-place warning was issued for the following communities:
- South of Lomita Blvd, South of the Tesoro Refinery, South of Deloras Drive;
- West of Terminal Island Freeway and including the California Yacht Marina – Wilmington
- Including the Pasha, Yang Ming, China Shipping, Vopak and Trapac Container Terminals
- East of the City Boundary, East of S. Western Ave; East of and including the Palos Verdes Shores Golf Club and surrounding residences
- North of the Coastline/Pacific Ocean
