Gunman Sentenced for Drive-By Shooting That Killed 8-Year-Old Boy

A man convicted of murder after shooting at a house, killing an 8-year-old boy who was visiting his family, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jonah Hwang died in the February 2017 drive-by shooting in Pomona. At least three rounds were fired into the home from outside, and Jonah was struck in the head. In addition to the life prison term, Houl was sentenced to an additional 25 years for the boy’s murder.

No one else was injured. Jonah later died at a hospital.

Sengchan Houl, 37, was convicted of first-degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle, along with two counts each of shooting at an occupied dwelling and negligent discharge of a firearm.

The shooting was one in a series of four reported at the home and connected to Houl. He was arrested by Pomona police about five weeks after Jonah was killed.

Jonah’s adoptive parents had brought him from an orphanage in Taiwan about five years ago to begin a new life in the United States.
