Deadly Crash Snarls Westbound Bay Bridge Traffic

A box truck slammed into the back of a bus on the incline of the Bay Bridge early Wednesday morning, leaving one person dead and triggering a massive traffic backup for commuters trying to head into San Francisco, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One of the passengers in the box truck died at the scene, the CHP reported. Two other people in the truck and three people in the Golden Gate Transit bus suffered injuries.

Four out of the five people who were injured were transported to the hospital, according to the CHP. The extent of the victims’ injuries was not immediately known.

The crash, which happened around 4:30 a.m., initially blocked three westbound lanes on the bridge. One lane has since reopened. It is not clear when the other two lanes will reopen.

NBC Bay Area’s Mike Inouye recommended that commuters use the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, San Mateo Bridge or BART to get around the wreck and backup.

Further information was not immediately available.
