OAKLAND — Luke Voit broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the eighth inning, and the Yankees added three more runs to beat the A’s 5-1 Tuesday night at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Oakland scored the game’s first run on a Stephen Piscotty solo home run in the second inning, but the Yankees tied it in the seventh when Jeurys Familia walked Aaron Hicks with the bases loaded. Voit homered off Fernando Rodney in the eighth to give New York a 2-1 lead. Adeiny Hechavarría also homered for the Yankees.
The A’s fell to 83-57 on the season, 3 1/2 games behind the AL West-leading Astros and 4 1/2 behind the Yankees for the first Wild Card spot. Oakland leads Seattle by 5 1/2 games for the second Wild Card position, thanks to the Mariners’ loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
Here’s what else you need to know…
— Liam Hendriks started the game for Oakland in their most recent “bullpenning” experiment. It went a lot better this time around, as the A’s didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning. Unfortunately, the Yankees offense eventually got going. Oakland ended up using eight different pitchers on the night, one shy of the record set Saturday.
— Daniel Mengden came on in the second inning and didn’t give up a hit until the sixth. He pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just the one hit, with three strikeouts. Mengden lowered his ERA to 4.25.
— J.A. Happ was nearly as good for the Yankees, allowing just one run on two hits, striking out five. Happ didn’t factor into the decision, but he is a perfect 5-0 since joining the Yankees from Toronto and 15-6 overall this season.
— The one run Happ allowed came in the second inning on Piscotty’s 22nd home run of the season, tying a career-high. Piscotty also extended his hitting streak to seven games. During the streak, he is batting .400 (10-for-25) with four homers and 11 RBI.
