2 killed, 2 injured in crash involving power pole in North Hollywood

The California Department of Motor Vehicles on Wednesday unveiled a new design and enhanced security features for all driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The updated cards showcase the “unique beauty of the state’s landscape, advanced security measures and updated technology,” according to a statement from the DMV.

“The new cards use next-generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said.

Current licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration date.

“While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires,” Gordon said.

One of the updated features includes a digital security signature embedded in one of the two barcodes on the back of the card. The magnetic strip has been removed.

The last major design update was in 2010. A new look was introduced again in 2018 due to the implementation of REAL ID.

Fees remain unchanged: $45 for a driver’s license and $39 for an identification card.

DMV recommends customers use their online services.
